Shortly after my intent to purchase discussions started with the former owners of the 124 Stemwinder Drive property, I started to envision serious solar. Fast forward seven years to July 30, 2024 - the day our interconnection to the electrical grid went live, and we're now flowing a serious amount of electrons back into the lodge and overflowing to the grid.
As a self-described business hippy, I aimed to maximize the photovoltaic production on the beautifully sloped, dead south facing, 1200 sq feet of roof on The Stemwinder Lodge. Sixty (60) panels later, we're producing enough energy to bump to 400 amp service coming into the lodge with a second 200a panel. The system's 24.3 kW max energy production is enough to power the annual energy requirements of two average homes. The Stemwinder Lodge is no average-sized home, mind you! The expectation is that the lodge is going to operate damn close to net-zero energy use going forward, and we electrified the heat/cooling with a 5-tonne, 19 SEER heat pump. And a shoutout to the Destination BC Climate Resiliency Initiative that helped soften the economic reality of our sustainability ambitions.
Needless to say, we're stoked about stoking the solar fires.
Quick Facts on Stemwinder Lodge: 5000 sq feet of space, 8 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, pool and foosball tables, poker table, dining seats 12-16, private hot tub. The lodge sleeps a lot of guests.
